Our story

Located in Somerset, we are a well-established circus school offering enjoyable and high-quality classes suitable for all age groups and skill levels. Additionally, we produce much-loved shows for the visitors at the famous Wookey Hole Caves.

Gerry Cottle, the circus legend, envisioned and poured his heart into The Circus School, and never gave up his dream of opening one! Upon acquiring Wookey Hole Caves and Mill in 2003, he saw this great big empty space that begged to be used for something magical.

Gerry then transformed the area into a theatre and training space designed to offer local children opportunities to develop valuable skills.

In 2007, the initial auditions were held, drawing 50 enthusiastic local children eager to participate… and the rest as they say is history!

Over the next couple of years, the training room evolved into a vibrant theater boasting 400 seats, ultimately becoming the heart of The Mill.

The Theater offers students a chance to gain real-world performance experience, while also attracting visitors to its captivating shows.

The Wookey Hole Circus has nurtured the potential of numerous local youngsters, equipping them with confidence-building abilities and fostering their resilience. Furthermore, it has granted them extraordinary opportunities, including the chance to showcase their talents at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival.

Numerous of our young individuals have transformed their skills into successful careers in the professional circus and performing arts.

This photograph captures a moment from Magique, a production where several of our young talents have advanced to perform in this captivating magic and illusions show. Some have progressed to perform alongside many other well-known shows including the Circus of Horrors, a show that holds international acclaim.

We go beyond teaching mere party tricks; children who have experienced our circus school emerge with life skills that will benefit them no matter their chosen path. They grasp the significance of teamwork, the art of persistent practice, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, the power of resilience, and the importance of taking responsibility for their surroundings.
